GAGA for Kitty

Friday, August 27th, 2010

As a young girl growing up, all of my friends had a particular character that they loved and cherished. We would beg our mothers to buy us every possible token of that character and carry something referencing it with us at all times as if it were a pet! Our character would accompany us to school, on weekends, for tea parties with friends. They were a part of our youth. A not so imaginary friend even! Now whether you were a Tweety fan or a Micky Mouse fan, no one can deny that everyone was intrigued by Hello Kitty. The sweetest little Japanese character ever made, not to mention the one and only companion for Japanese school girls and young women. The Hello Kitty phenomena spread around the world faster than you can say ‘Cute little cat!’

Hello Kitty has amazingly just turned 35 and is still as popular as ever with the young and innocent population of the world (and me). Now, although Hello Kitty deserves a standing ovation for not only being the most popular little kitty, but also winning a UNICEF special friend of the children award and developing intrigue of Japanese culture among the Western societies, I am not sure that a shoot featuring Lady Gaga was exactly what the creators (or the young kids parents) had in mind.

Gaga has already accustomed her critics and fans to the wackiest and most daring outfits ever seen (and let’s not mention that we all are still secretly wondering if the hermaphrodite rumour is true), but this time has Gaga gone too far?

Shot in London with famed photographers Marcus Klinko and Indrani along with stylist GK Reid, Gaga has done a whole shoot in honor of Hello Kitty, but this is definitely beyond the sexiest thing the little kitty has ever seen! In fact, I highly doubted that the word sexy could have ever been used in the same sentence as Hello Kitty, but apparently Gaga has just proven me wrong. The shoot featured a quite extravagant floor length gown made entirely out of Hello Kitty dolls, complete with Hello Kitty pumps and a bedazzled kitty belt.

Lady+GaGa+Gaga+Hello+Kitty

Another shot saw a dress made entirely out of crystals and shockingly, a diamond encrusted kitty necklace worn over her crotch! And that’s not even as crazy as it goes!

After seeing this jaw dropping shoot and not really knowing what to make of it, I decided to look up the 35th anniversary website to see the comparisons next to each other.

The pale coloured site featuring the sweet kitty explains the kitty colour scheme in the first paragraph and how it all fits together.

The red stands for friendship, pink for cute, yellow for heartfelt, green for wish and lavender for sweet.

I wonder what colour Gaga stands for!

New+Bitmap+Image

Fendi is all about eye-catching prints or colors, and this bag is no exception!

With a classic sophisticated design, the Fendi Peek-a-Boo bag is a fool-proof stylish choice when it comes to picking out a timeless tote.

Fendi’s Peek-a-Boo boasts a birkin-esque shape, a removable shoulder strap, protective metal feet, turn lock closures, and satin lining  and has been toted by celebs and fashionistas alike.

My pick? With the current trend in camel and muted tones coming down the runway I’d opt for the above colour.

Fendi Peek-a-Boo = Tres Chic!!

Returning to Italian roots

An icon for over thirty yeas, Madonna is anything but “everyday.” In Dolce and Gabbana’s newest ad campaign, Madonna is featured posing with an Italian family, dancing with the son, holding a chicken and posing with a beautiful baby. The photos have an everyday feel to them, a casual vibe that Madonna is merely a striking figure in the family, and with her strong jaw line and immediately recognisable face, she certainly is striking. A tribute to her Italian roots, the juxta positioning of the pop queen with the gorgeous family in their ‘Sunday best’ almost inspires a double take – is that really Madonna? The images create two thoughts, that the clothes are wearable in many situations other than just the runway, and a reminder that Madonna is a real person, and has a family of her own.

Domenico and Stefano were said to be delighted when Madonna agreed to participate in the campaign, as she could be incorporated into the desired aesthetic perfectly. The black and white photos are classic, and Madonna’s longstanding fame adds a striking element to the campaign.

Effortless styling a worldwide favourite – Isabel Marant

The name Isabel Marant is now synonymous with a carefree, effortless, stylish Parisienne woman. Everyone raves about Marant’s slouchy boots from last year’s fall collection, claiming they were the start of her success, however there is far more to the designer’s popularity than boots, albeit beautifully handcrafted. Isabel Marant has been building her fashion label for the past 16 years, beginning with a jewellery line and progressing to a fully fledged clothing line showcased at Paris fashion week. The designer’s personal touch is what makes the line so successful; she ensures that the clothes are comfortable and wearable by personally altering them while trying them on – she doesn’t even own a fitting model. Marant’s own effortless, no frills style echoes throughout the collections, while embellishments like sequins and delicate fabrics maintain the high end feel favoured by celebrities worldwide.

The Fall 2010/2011 collection showcases elegant but natural looks. Soft silk blouses, sequined stove pipe jeans, warm but unsophisticated coats and wrap dresses finished with black leather tie belts graced the runway.

Maintaining the look of effortlessness is not easy, however Marant’s personal style, work ethic and personal involvement in the design and fit of the pieces is why label Isabel Marant is now loved worldwide.

Deep in the heart of Sydney’s rag district, down a dark lane behind a brightly printed curtain, an eclectic group of creatives mingled the night away surrounded by lush fabrics and homewares. Just your average Wednesday night in our city!

The quirky set were out to play last night to celebrate Finnish textile and clothing company Marimekko, famed for it’s bold, vibrant prints and expressive designs. Straight from the streets of Helsinki, the label’s legendary designs have been seen on the likes of Jacqueline Kennedy and Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw, and the deliciously different prints have adorned everything from tea dresses and handbags to crockery and sofas.

Last night team Marimekko took over ‘The Roller’, an edgy studio space in Surry Hills, piling their prints on every available surface and proving that clashing prints are actually pleasing to the eye! We dined on cute little sausage rolls, sipped wine and champagne, and cooed over the fabulous products which will be landing on Australian shores in 2011.

I even left with my own Marimekko shopping tote and a copy of their magazine to scout for my next style inspiration (as the girls in the office will testify, I LOVE bright prints!). Thank you Marimekko!

FrockShop (Hearts) Gala Gonzalez + RSFF xx

Wednesday, August 25th, 2010

With our flats swiftly changed to heels and a quick re-apply/spritz Rox and I flew out the office doors last night to meet Celebrity fashion blogger Gala Gonzalez in town for RSFF and exclusively blogging for FrockShop.com  whilst on our shores.

Standing in the Rosemount O VIP Wine Bar with the team from FrockShop.com and the famed blogger herself, Gala was a standout – fresh faced and naturally graceful, with a personal style that whilst clearly considered was somewhat effortless. An accent to die for – London-based Spanish blogger Gala Gonzalez is the epitome of everything that is relevant in fashion.

Seated in the front row the Spanish beauty was a study of concentration snapping each look that came gliding down runway with the kind of precision that implied her camera was merely another limb – between Camilla and Marc, Ginger and Smart, Anna and Boy and more (many of the brands stocked on FrockShop.com) there was some serious talent on show.

With several fashionable collaborations under her belt (H&M, Botkier, and Loewe to name a few)  - Gala  is one style setter that is giving the fashion click a run for their money.

FrockShop’s ear to the ground during this year’s Rosemount Australian Fashion Festival – Gala’s front row favorites will be appearing on FrockShopStyle.com – the online boutiques recently launched blog – as from today.

Keeping it stylish in the freezing snow is a challenge, however, snow boot brand Sorel is here to help. Since 1962 Sorel has boasted functional boots, looking cute has just been a bonus. In really cold conditions, boot soles need to stay warmer than the ground so the grip stays active, and snow boots all require an inside liner that can be changed and washed. Sorel have mastered all of these elements while also incorporating details such as faux fur trims, laces and unique prints to ensure that girls, boys and kids can look sylish even in the harshest winters. Say goodbye to chunky ugly boots, in clubs and bars in ski towns, many people wear their Sorels! With prices ranging from $85 USD to $200, varying lengths and designs, Sorels are an investment guaranteed to last years.

Womens Tivoli Collection

Sorel’s  wearability has generated a cult following by many including celebrities. Bar Rafaeli and Jessica Simpson have been caught wearing them, and a certain vogue.com editor raves about her Sorels. Acknowledging that fashion can be functional and comfortable while retaining elements of style is what generates popularity for any brand, Sorel is no exception.
