Notorious Photos: Sweaty Style!

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Arnette’s Notorious event last night brought to my attention many things – perhaps one that I have been pondering the most is the illusive quest to be photogenic. The media frenzy that it was has seen many pictures circulating Sweaty Betty Headquarters – some good and others ‘banish to the trash, never to be seen again’ not so good.

So how does one achieve the perfect photo pose? Many of the Betties take different approaches to achieve the most flattering shot, note picture reference above. Angle head down with eyes up to create the ‘doe eye’ look? Situate yourself in the middle so as to have ‘bat wing’s’ disguised by those around you? Place something oversize in front of you to distract attention from other parts?

One trick that has particularly caught my eye is the ‘how to disguise a broken nail move,’ to anyone not in the know this stance looks like any run of the mill gangster symbol – and as we were in the presence of one of the worlds most ‘notorious’ rap artist, Snoop Dogg, who were we to question? It was only this morning when reveling in the pictures Sarah was questioned as to her gang affiliation …. Not to worry, there is none, she had a broken nail but was tying to hide it!

Mission accomplished I say – and note to self to pull this one out in the future.

SNOOP MANIA

Friday, October 31st, 2008

So you’ve heard the goss- from Monika’s new found career as a door bitch and Caz’s mug shot mania, the Arnette Notorious event was the highlight of the Betties year, but it was the arrival of Snoop Dogg that really got the party started.

This Betty knew her colleagues were an amusing bunch, what she didn’t know was that the arrival of Snoop Doggy Dogg (as resident Wigga, Sophie now affectionately refers to him) would unleash the true nature of two of the team. It all started with a bit of harmless arm waving and rapping from Soph Dog as Snoop’s ‘Pop it like it’s Hot’ announced the main man’s arrival. As Snoop entered the building, flanked by an entourage of security guards (possibly the world’s largest humans FYI), Sweaty Betties- Tahlia and Sophie transformed…

In a frenzy of Snoop praise from the pair, Tahlia got straight into action, practising her best paparazzi moves. Her technique for achieving such photographs mainly involved squeezing between two of the aforementioned security guards, showing no fear of potentially being crushed to death, her moves eventually landing her a prime dancing position with Snoop.

Whilst Tahlia was busy dancing between Snoop’s security, Sophie could be seen in the background proudly exposing her well rehearsed rap and hip hop moves and could be heard dishing out such lines as “I really enjoy that Nacho Pop- he just really appeals to the Wigga in me”.

In all fairness to Sophie and Tahlia they weren’t the only one’s caught up in Snoop Dogg mania, from girls jumping over lounges to get to Snoop to the men scrambling to shake Snoop’s hand. All attendees of the Arnette event were caught up in Snoop mania .

MUG SHOT MANIA

Friday, October 31st, 2008

As you entered the Arnette event you were snapped up by photographers (keeping in theme with ‘Notorious’) at the mug shot wall!!

It was a huge HIT – with all our favourite celebrities including April Rose Pengilly, Dj Chris, Becky Thompson, and the man himself Snoop Dogg wanting to have their photo taken at the most ‘entertaining’ photo wall this year. You can see from the pictures just how much FUN everyone was having  – and wanting to get involved and get their ‘WIGGA ON’

DON’T MESS WITH THE DOOR BITCH…

Friday, October 31st, 2008

Or door bitches (plural) in this instance! Last night saw the launch of Arnette’s Notorious sunglasses range at Nevermind nightclub in Oxford St (www.clubnevermind.com); with special guest Snoop Dogg. Only in my dreams did I imagine the throngs of fans that would be waiting outside the night club to catch a glimpse of the mega-star; not to mention the rows of photographers with cameras at the ready to get the million dollar shot! Miss Pendergast, Miss Jacenko and myself were given the job of manning the door for the night; and attempted to take a ‘tough love’ approach to the crowd we were expecting. I must point out here that our new found confidence as door bitches was partly (ok, wholly) due to the fact that behind us was an entourage of 4 large (large being a MASSIVE understatement) security guards watching our backs.

Snoop’s arrival was like nothing I have ever experienced before in my life- talk about the maddest, fastest, craziest rush of people, flashes of cameras and screams of media and fans- I was so star struck (while still trying to keep my ‘door bitch cool’ persona) that the moment past before reality even sunk in as to who was standing 1.5 metres away from me!

As the night wore on and we stood furiously marking names off our lists (boy did my knowledge of the alphabet get a workout) we heard rumours of Snoop Dogg carving it up on the dancefloor! Needless to say we were kicking ourselves in our sky high heels but at the same time realising our black carpet responsibilities. After all, last night’s event was the hottest ticket in town!

With all that said and done, the highlight of our evening of door bitchiness came during Snoop Dogg’s departure. I must warn you to sit down before reading the following…

Not only did the man himself give us a wave (and I thought THAT was cool); he wrapped his arms around us and thanked us for all our hardwork. After a couple of snaps together he departed on his merry way- with his posse of the largest humans I have EVER seen in my life – possibly to head to KFC to purchase some of that famous fried chicken. But can we just go back to the fact that we did indeed TOUCH SNOOP DOGG! Ah!!!

Peace out homies..

Italian Flavor!

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

When thinking of Italy certain things come to mind – Vespas, pasta and pizza, tomatoes, green, white and red, The Leaning Tower of Pisa, gondolas, bruschetta and men!

Elisabetta Gregoraci should now be one of these. The smoldering Italian model, TV host and dancer has cemented her place in our Italian ‘Hot List.’ Elisabetta got pulses racing when she modeled the new Selmark lingerie collection at the Palacio de Congresos in Madrid on October the 17th.

I’m sure the new Winter 09 collection of exquisite Selmark lingerie helped Elisabetta’s cause – we are all purchasing in the hope of looking this good in our smalls!

Notes from Hong Kong – The Pop-Up Store

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

If trends can come and go, why can’t the stores that display them do the same?

You guessed it, retail outlets increasingly do – ‘POP-UP’ stores, as they are termed, are a retail initiative to add a fresh feel to retail, exclusivity and surprise. They have a tendency to turn up unannounced, quickly draw in the crowds, and then disappear!

I was lucky enough to experience one of these retail geniuses on a recent trip to Hong Kong (see me lined up in the queue there?)

Hong Kong fashion institution, I.T, enjoyed their 20th birthday with a dedicated house of celebration. I.T. collaborated with all of the brands they stock for the occasion, including A Bathing Ape, WTAPS, Neighborhood, Sophnet, Fingercroxx, Martin Margiela, Helmut Lang, Hello Kitty, Porter and many many more.

The product was exclusively available at the I.TXX Pop-Up Store, which opened its doors to the public on October 24th for three days only – being the keen shopper I am I had to purchase one of these limited edition collaboration tee shirts.

Designed to get maximum number of consumers through the doors the gallery like shopping space didn’t allow one to try on (Roxy’s only hesitation) – instead upon entry you were issued with a catalogue ushered around the glass incased products to select a style. Those interested in purchasing had to line up at a separate spot outside the store and complete an order form. Once at the front your order was waiting for you – this was the epitome of a well oiled machine!

Sweaty Betty can’t wait to see who here in Australia picks up this retail trend – I certainly will be first in line.

HANDBAG HYSTERIA

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

So many options so little time! …oh and money.

If I had a bottomless wallet I’d have no choice but to splurge on several handbag options from this season’s Gucci collection.

Gucci’s Hysteria Collection has so many amazing accessories- including a knight in shining armour!

My favourite is the ‘Hysteria’ medium top handle bag (pictured right)- the perfect piece for channelling this season’s ‘Hippy- Luxe’ look, the rich tapestry print is complemented with gold hardware and balck leather.

Tallulah Morton

Wednesday, October 29th, 2008

Tallulah Morton is an Australian fashion model born in 1991 in North Sydney, New South Wales. Since being discovered at age 11 whilst on holiday in the Gold Coast, she has gone from strength to strength. Within months of her discovery she was offered a contract at the renowned IMG Models, and ever since the people are lining up for her (including legendary photographer Steven Meisel and the glam fashionhouse Gucci).

Tallulah had her first professional modelling appearance in 2005, opening a show by Australian fashion designer Josh Goot . A 20-page shoot in fashion magazine Follow was published shortly thereafter, quickly leading to her New York debut, at another Josh Goot show. Her age reportedly inhibited her ability to work in Europe initially, and was referenced again when bans on under-age modelling were presented in 2007.

Morton has featured on the cover of many Australian magazines including Russh (twice) and The Daily Telegraph’s ‘Sunday’ (16 July 2006). Her other magazine credits include Vogue, Marie Claire and Harper’s Bazaar

Proving her creditability even further, she was recently announced as the face of M.A.C’s new Emanuel Ungaro range- not bad for someone only 17!!!

Killer Heels

Friday, October 24th, 2008

The latest trend escaping the catwalk is shoes that have heels so obscure and incomprehensible that they almost take themselves into a whole new category of footwear. Victoria Beckham recently stepped out in a pair of heel- less boots (which had us all thinking WTF??!!) Not shy of introducing such insane trends, Posh Spice also pioneered the gladiator of all gladiator heels- super high, gravity defying heels that came complete with a ring of spikes- a good way to put a new spin on the term ‘Killer Heels’!

MELBOURNE CUP SWEATY STYLE

Monday, October 20th, 2008

What better way to start Monday morning than with a pretty pink envelope sitting on our desks.  Inside was an exclusive Betty invite to our very own Melbourne Cup festivities.

No longer did the Betties jealously wish rain upon those lucky enough to attend the many celebrations across the country, as the Sweaty Betties will be attending their own private party. With Fascinators a must and Yum Cha a plenty it’s a sure bet the Betty office will be the hot ticket event on Tuesday, November 4! Sarah B x
