get set for a weekend of stargazing!

For all those star gazers out there this is your year, 2009 is the UN International Year of Astronomy. Created to highlight the need for darker skies through smart lighting in cities globally, Sydney is taking part by holding the Festival of the Stars, Smart Light Sydney. Held at the Sydney Observatory the Festival of the Stars will showcase the opportunities for spectacular stargazing thanks to reduced light pollution.

 

 

The Festival of the Stars will host two nights of spectacular stargazing on the first weekend of Smart Light Sydney. Visitors will be able to view Saturn, the constellations of the deep south that make up Argo Navis, the legendary ship from Jason and the Argonauts along with zodiac constellations of Leo and Virgo through telescopes.

 

 

Visitors will also be able to view the latest in astronomy products, meet astronomers from all over Sydney, experience special 3D theatre presentations and talks every half hour, food stalls and entertainment plus every adult entry includes a glass of wine.

 

 

The event is from the 29th –30th May 2009: 6–10pm at the Sydney Observatory.
