National Anthem- Lana Del Ray

July 5th, 2012

To be totally real with you, I didn’t even think I really liked Lana Del Rey. There’s something about her apparently real, asymmetric lips and whiny songs that didn’t originally really gel with me at the most fundamental level of my being. But I’m the first to admit after watching this film clip, I’m a changed woman. There is something so sublime about her new National Anthem film clip. And I can’t seem to comprehend its magic. I think it stems from the absolute romantic ideal, not only of the romantic relationship featured, but a romantic ideal of life in the 1960′s.

Released just before US Independence Day, it delves into the mystery and legacy of  JFK and his women. And I’m totally sold on the magic. Featuring A$AP Rocky, currently one of the most attractive men in rap (and let’s be honest, the world) as JFK, the study of the romance only adds to its genuine appeal. It’s not often that a film clip tells a valuable story, or even sells an image, but this one does both. And absolutely kills it.

After watching the film clip tens of times, I’m ready for the 1960′s American dream featuring me in floral dresses, headbands and linen. I don’t know if that’s what they are trying to sell, it’s honestly probably more focused on the romantic mystery of Lana herself, but I want to put a credit card deposit on the whole 1960′s era. And then buy the whole thing. Right now my closest tangible access point to the 60′s is the cat-eye makeup I wear every day, and after watching that film clip over and over and wishing I were Lana herself, I can’t see that changing any time soon.
