THE DRIFTER COMES TO TOWN…

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

Last week we were chillin’ with the country’s top snowboarders, and this week it was the surfers turn as we partied with the legendary Rob Machado and the Hurley crew…

The guys were out in force for the Australian premiere of Rob Machado’s surfboard self-discovery movie ‘The Drifter’ – renowned as one of the greatest surfers of his generation, Californian Machado was ranked among the top ten for eleven straight years and holds 12 World Championship Tour victories under his belt. Following the six-month walkabout of surfing’s most recognisable characters, ‘The Drifter’ documents Machado’s adventures in Indonesia, from new worlds to mega waves and his constant quest for complete isolation.

Some of the city’s biggest surfers, cool media types and VIPs crowded into Paddington’s Chauvel Theatre to be greeted by Machado himself strumming his guitar on stage – the film’s star chatted with the audience, handed out prizes including Hurley board shorts and an iPod Touch, and introduced the surf biopic, before joining the audience to watch the feature length film. What a dude!

The feature length film included a guest appearance from Kelly Slater (swoon) and had us laughing along at Rob’s antics – including buying (and breaking) a second-hand motorbike, getting involved in some local dancing, and losing his passport along the way.

The Drifter is on limited release throughout Australia. www.hurley.com

Totally Addicted to Blogs!

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

The latest way to consume your daily dose of fashion in the Facebook age is to hit up the style blogs. Fashion-forward folk are looking past magazines and catwalks and turning to blogs for style advice, next-season forecasts and a snoop inside a cyber stranger’s wardrobe.

image001

Here at Sweaty Betty we are ogling over Tavi Gevinson’s blog Style Rookie. The self proclaimed “dork” is only 13 years old, and has already sat front row at a Marc Jacobs show and featured on the front of US glossy ‘Pop’. Juggling science projects with her online Fashion empire she manages to post almost daily and was chaperoned late month to New York Fashion week by her Dad. Cute!

image002

Suzie Lau of British based ‘Style Bubble is a decade older than Tavi has gained similar cred in the fashion industry since the birth of her blog three `years ago. Last month she was one of only two bloggers invited to a Gucci show in New York, and has since accepted tickets to Chanel and Lanvin.

With 10, 000 hits a day her blog is well worth a squiz!

And for some hot shoe porn, perve on designer footwear blog ‘Jak & Jil’!

BEWARE: Blogs are extremely addictive!!!

We’d love a bit of Westwood on our walls!!

Invite Vivienne Westwood into your home this summer and get absolutely fabulously decorated walls!  The fashion queen and her hubby have launched a series of patterns for Cole and Son that will give any room a fashionistas edge!

Let print anarchy rule supreme with the Squiggle design, or get a more personal touch with Lace. There are trademark checks, a battered union jack and beautiful florals.  Mix and match and clash them together, one for each room and one on the ceiling, or even on the floor?!

We don’t care how it happens, but the Betties want a bit of Westwood on our walls!!!

balmainquiltedbag

All of the Betties almost fell off our chairs this morning to find that the new line of Balmain handbags had finally been released on Net-A-Porter!!

Our faves are the Mat quilted bag and Leo embellished bag above.  On close inspection- the Mat quilting is not symmetrical, giving the classic quilt pattern a modern twist and at $1,915 it’s not that unreasonable (though not cheap either!!).  I have to admit I was expecting 5 figure bags considering the cost of  Balmain RTW however, to our pleasant surprise the bag prices (for the most part) are acceptable.

Unknown

The suede punk rock studded bag below left is the star of the collection at a crazy $3,925 but the workmanship is unbelievable – very haute couture!!

All the Betties know what’s number one on our Christmas Lists!

WHEN THE BETTIES MET THE ‘BOARDERS

Friday, October 23rd, 2009

If I was a single girl, last night would have been my ideal hunting ground for a handsome suitor – over 250 of Sydney’s gorgeous tanned snowboarders and surfers, copious amounts of alcohol, death-defying extreme sports and some seriously hot tunes…

IMG_0029

The gathering was to celebrate ‘The B’ – Burton’s latest short film chronicling the stunts of its pro snowboarding team in parks, pipes, and backcountry throughout New Zealand and North America. As designated door-bitches (and the most over-dressed people there – the crowd was a mass of thongs and boardies!) we were lapping up the attention from the guys, who included Shaun Kenny Dowall, Anthony Cherrington and Troy Savage – Sydney Roosters, Burton professional riders Mitch Allan, Jye Kearney, Nick Gregory, Tom Pelley, and pro surfer Koby Abberton.

Armed with popcorn and beers (kindly sponsored by Corona), the movie was screened to whoops and calls from the audience, and then the party kicked off at upstairs Bridge Bar – but not before Roxy did a complete star turn as elevator-driver, jamming as many people as possible into each elevator and keeping the crowds entertained while they waited!

You’d never have thought it was a Thursday night – these guys were partying hard! The wine and beers flowed freely and we worked the room like true PR queens, even finding our own young pro snowboarder, Ollie, who reckoned he was man enough to take on the Betties! And Roxy earned major credentials after informing the boys that she’d ‘hung out’ with Snoop Dogg last year!

Burton Movie 003

With our hectic schedules, we had to call it a night early and leave the young things to it – we’re sure there were lots of sore heads this morning! Check out the Burton website for a sneak preview of ‘The B’.
